Icarus & Excerpts from Songs of the Sea

Icarus Poster.jpg
Previously Performed:

October 29, 2022 at the KnJ Theater at Peridance in NYC

The world premier of Icarus is loosely based on the Greek mythology of Icarus and his father, Daedalus. This version of the tale highlights the generational gap between immigrant parents, who struggled to survive, and their American born children, who are tasked with fulfilling the American Dream. The ballet challenges the notions of failure vs success and the burden of self-fulfillment vs familial hopes and responsibilities.

Songs of the Sea explores the common principles of resilience and perseverance through adversity, particularly through the lens of refugees and immigrants seeking safety for their families. Inspired by stories from the archives of StoryCorps, Songs of the Sea brings together narratives from various female immigrant experiences and celebrates the identity of women as cultural bearers and protectors for displaced communities.

This original ballet follows the true story of a Hmong refugee and her internal family challenges set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War and immigration to the United States. Diaspora brings together three generations of Hmong American women's experiences through a journey of self discovery, sacrifice, and redemption.

Choreographed to a score by Antonin Dvorak, HBT Co-Director Ho-Shia Thao uses the classical language of ballet to narrate a new voice for American dance while highlighting universal challenges of American immigrants as they redefine their ideals of self, family, and community.
