Con Te
In Loving Memory of Lina D'Angelo and Marco Vultaggio

Choreography and Costumes by Debra King

Choreographer's Note:

"Con Te" is based on the life of my Aunt and Godmother, Lina. Many of my fondest childhood memories are of spending holidays together and of her continuing to fill our plates with her delicious cooking even after you said, "basta!" or "enough!" Sadly she passed away rather suddenly about six years ago from Glioblastoma. While her time with us was cut short, her life was extremely full. This piece is a tribute to that life and to the story of her and her family. The story begins in the 1950s, with the seven Bona siblings—including my father—immigrating from Italy. The family splits during their journey: the eldest, Mario, leaves first for Canada, while the rest leave on three separate ships for New York. Maria, already married, remains in Italy. We get a glimpse into Lina’s perspective of the anticipation that comes with arriving in a new country. The siblings are joyfully reunited in New York, but their celebration is soon tempered by the reality of adapting to a new culture, sharing cramped living spaces, and enduring long, strenuous workdays. In New York, Lina meets her future husband, Charlie, who also immigrated from Italy. Together, they build a beautiful life and raise two daughters. In the final movement, Lina and her immediate family have to come to terms with her sudden illness, ultimately finding strength in one another as they say goodbye.
